What Image Do You Want To Convey?
What good is a video introduction on your job application, if it isn't done right?
For us, the best video resume is clear and simple. Take a look at what "composes" a VideoProfile.tv video:
How It Looks and Sounds
- High Definition: We shoot everything in HD and downsample to a generous, large image. We aren't serving up millions of videos around the world, so our bandwidth is dedicated to your video resumes.
- At-Your-Desk Simulation: The impression we like to convey is that you are sitting across from the desk from the manager. Ideally, when you are invited in for an interview the manager will feel as if it is the second time he or she has seen you.
- Professional Lighting: Lighting is an art and a science. We use the latest florescent fixures for a flattering image without the tremendous heat generated by older production equipment. We know how to adjust the angles to eliminate glare from glasses, etc.
- Hype-Free Video: Many people jump from creating amateur (webcam) clips to fully animated, artificial background productions while missing the point. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Our videos avoid even the briefest distraction, and 100% the manager's time is spent watching you. It's simply common courtesy in the business world. And don't get us started about the background music(!) that is added by some companies...
- Great Sound: Video professionals know one the biggest secrets of the trade - the audio quality, epecially in an interview setup, is more critical than the video. We always use lavalier microphones for the best quality sound.
What It Says
- A Strong Introduction: Even though it is called a "video resume," it is really more of an introduction. Averaging about 60-seconds, each video we shoot focuses on the unique attributes of the candidate. If you met someone in person, would you state your name and then list your accomplishments? Of course not! We encourage people to think about their reason to be their industry, their enjoyment of working with customers, of solving problems, etc. It's surprising how much can be conveyed in just a few seconds.
- Coaching: We have a lot of experience in bringing out the best from people. Our coaching is surprisingly interactive (we start with a blank slate) and will get you thinking about your strengths and how you can bring your talents to the next employer. Many past clients have commented that their experience in our studio actually improved their confidence in interviews.
- Multiple Takes: Generally people need about 20 minutes worth of practice before being comfortable in front of the camera. This is a natural and essential part of the process.
- Telepropter: After several months of testing, we recommend the use of our teleprompter for all our clients regardless of their experience. It isn't always perfect, and for some people there are indications of "reading" the material, but we feel the positives strongly outweighs the potential negatives. To get the message across, it is important to feel as relaxed as possible in front of the camera.
The Impression It Conveys
- "I'm a Proactive Job Candidate": Hiring Managers know that it is a tough environment out there; they are facing challenges in their own companies. A candidate with a video introduction on VideoProfile.tv knows how to stand out and be innovative...traits that managers admire and are always seeking.
- Familiarity: It's simple human nature that people like and trust individuals as they get to know them. The basic "sanity test" in the hiring process is the telephone screen. When this happens, the hiring manager will be connecting the video they saw of you with the voice on the phone--and perhaps with some discussion points from things you said. This is a competitive advantage over other candidates.
- Professionalism: We've yet to speak to a hiring manager who isn't impressed by this website and the quality videos we produce. Your choice to utilize our service speaks volumes about how you, as a job candidate, will be an asset to their organization.
Alternatives
There are a growing number of sites that "host" video resumes. The promises are simple:
- You can do it on a webcam, in the privacy and convenience of your house
- It costs little, or nothing, to upload your video file off your computer
- Hiring managers are visiting these sites, searching for candidates. You don't have to do a thing, wait for the phone to ring...
Although it is possible, with quite a bit of work, to produce a reasonable video resume on your own, the fantasy of employers sitting at their desks and viewing dozen of videos on "YouTube" like portals is simply unrealistic. It isn't an effective use of their time, and it certainly isn't convenient.
Two Big Mistakes on Homemade Videos
- Webcam Special. This usually means poor lighting, setting, sound, and overall video quality. The video often comes across as a type of moving "mugshot" image, and can be difficult to hear the words. Few employers would be patient enough to sit through these, not to mention pick up the phone.
- Video Hobbyist. A number of these videos are on YouTube. You've seen them spoofed on TV and ridiculed in the media. Lots of splashy graphics, background music, slideshow style regurgitation of words that already appear on the paper resume, and general hype. This is the kind of "production" that won't get the phone ringing. Ever.
Again, if you're going to use a video of yourself in your job applications, make sure it conveys a professional image. We've worked hard to ensure your success!
